What can you say to let her know that she's the best there is and that you hope you have inherited some of her wisdom and her strength?

Years pass as in Allende novels, raking stories through time like Oak leaves in November, collecting the significant and the arbitrary trivial. Serendipity finally crescendoed in 2001. By this time both were widowed and living alone. Walsh felt ill one day and called Vallangca to take him to the hospital. Days later he lay in the operating room, for abdominal surgery. As he recovered, Vallangca stayed with him and took care of him. They grew closer and closer, Vallangca’s vibrant heart seemingly strengthening Walsh’s by osmosis. A romance blossomed. That rare love discovered in the twilight of life.

Soon their relationship began to mirror that of bashful adolescents. Frequent visits to each other’s houses. Long walks through the city or by the ocean, always holding hands like honeymooners. Receptions at the Common Wealth Club or the World Affairs Council. Dancing at least twice a month, often at the Fairmont Hotel’s historic Tonga Room.

Then in 1987 her son asked her to help him plan his wedding. He wanted to hold his reception at Fort Mason, a former military base in San Francisco; however only military personnel are authorized to sponsor use of the facilities. Vallangca, at this point, had maintained only a single, thread-thin connection to the military.

Decades before, when they parted ways, Walsh had given her the phone number of his mother-in-law, who had a steady landline, in case Vallangca ever needed to reach him. The contact, by now covered in forty years worth of dust and cobwebs, was a long-shot. “Surely,” Vallangca thought, “the number had been disconnected or changed by now.” But she made the call and Walsh’s mother-in-law picked up-- not even ration overwhelms serendipity. To Vallangca’s surprise, Walsh had been living in San Francisco, just a few blocks away. And for the next fourteen years the two reunited army buddies maintained a passing friendship.
